This picture had to be taken with the Quantaray 70-300 as they were 35-50 feet away, and very leary of me. I know this isn't a very popular lens, but what if anything, can be done to make it sharper??
I think the aperture was pretty small, iso up for quicker ss. Maybe this is a case of camera shake. (Quite possible, LOL)

You might be getting camera shake if you are zoomed all the way out at 200+ and if there is no VR/IS. Try a tripod and see if you get a sharper image.
If you shoot RAW, you can increase you ss a bit, even if it meters underexposed, and then in Camera Raw increase your exposure again.
